Smiths was founded in the early 1900's by Robert Smith. It operated as a footwear business in Westburn Street until a management takeover in 1948. Mr J. Wilson, along with his partner Mr Mitchell, continued the footwear business and opened a sports shop across the road on Westburn Street. Originally, R.C. Smith & Co. Ltd. operated from one branch which employed five staff.
In 1962, R.C. Smith & Co. Ltd. moved to its present location in West Blackhall Street. In 1965 a fire destroyed the building and it had to be completely rebuilt. In the Spring of 1989 there was a facelift of the exterior of the building. With the property having been rebuilt, expansion has been easier and with diversification extra staffing has been necessary. This has grown from twelve in the early days to over 25 at present.
Over the years Smiths has seen changes in the range of goods it sells. From originally selling footwear in 1948, it added sports goods in the 1950's; both ranges having grown over the years, and the addition of a schoolwear department in 1984.
Smiths has always been known for competitively-priced products and good service. The priority of each member of staffis to ensure that all customers are attended in the best possible way, and to uphold the company's reputation for providing good value and excellent service.
